PFG is the leading manufacturer of float glass in Southern Africa, as well as laminated glass and mirrors. The company produces 260 000 tons of float glass products per annum, supplying into both domestic and international building and automotive industries.
Main job purpose
- The purpose of the production manager is to manage the day to day performance of the laminates teams through the team leaders in the plant where shifts are worked. The performance is measured by the amount of output relative to the expected and planned output, the losses incurred during production, the safety of the employees and general level of satisfaction of the employees.
Main Objective
- Responsible for the day to day performance/productivity of the production team by driving the achievement of business plan outputs to achieve target cost/unit indicators for all products.
- Monitor the amount of output relative to expected and planned output and losses incurred during production by evaluating hourly production and quality reports in order to make adjustments to meet the set targets.
- Optimise Plant performance by reducing raw material and finished goods losses to reduce cost of production.
- Ensure controllable costs are within budget by monitoring the expenditure versus the available budget in order not to exceed agreed targets.
- Improve safety measures and compliance to the OHS act by reviewing and adding to current standard operating procedures and risk assessments in order to ensure a safe working environment taking safety hazards and potential risks into account.
- Build skill capacity by identifying and meeting developments needs, creating individual development plans and managing the plan to improve the flexibility of the operators on the shop floor.
- Drive World Class Manufacturing standards by applying Visual Performance Management, 5S (cleanliness of the working environment), teamwork and focused improvement projects in order to optimise production efficiency.
- To ensure staff are effectively managed and held accountable through performance management and disciplinary action, and that staff are trained, coached and mentored through the talent management and IDP processes.
- Ensure distribution processes are in place that support on-time, in-full delivery of good quality products in line with customer requirements.
Critical job requirements
- Grade 12
- Degree in relevant field (Science/Engineering/Production)
- 8 years hands-on operational experience in a manufacturing plant
- 5 years of leadership experience managing teams in a production environment
- Ability to manage a business unit
- Ability to operate at the plant level
- Hands on involvement in the operations of business units
Knowledge
- In depth working knowledge of Relevant legislation (SHERQ, BCEA, LRA)
- Knowledge of Human Resource policies and procedures
- Working knowledge of SAP (HR and Production)
